For villagers' coffee orders, the amount of milk and sugar will always match. For example, if a villager requests a little bit of milk they will also prefer 1 spoonful of sugar. The other matches are no milk and no sugar; the regular amount of milk and 2 spoonfuls of sugar; and lots of milk and 3 spoonfuls of sugar. Special characters do not always follow this pattern and often have preferences with the amount of milk and sugar differing from each other. | For villagers' coffee orders, the amount of milk and sugar will always match. The Roost is a café that first appears in Animal Crossing: Wild World. In Wild World, City Folk, and New Horizons, it is located in the museum, while in New Leaf, it is a separate building available as a public works project.
Operated by Brewster, it serves coffee that the player can purchase and drink twice per day for 200 Bells. Prior to New Leaf, it is also the venue where K.K. Slider performs every Saturday night. Additionally, various characters can be seen at the bar in the café each day.
Appearances
In Wild World
In Animal Crossing: Wild World, The Roost appears in the basement of the museum. The player can purchase a cup of coffee for 200 Bells from Brewster once per day. While initially reserved, Brewster will open up to the player more if they purchase coffee over a consecutive period of days. If the player talks to Brewster again each day, he will become more friendly, and he will say more things whenever the player gets coffee from him. If the player becomes a good friend to Brewster, he offers to put some pigeon milk into their coffee.
K.K. Slider appears on stage at The Roost on Saturday nights from 7:30 PM to 12:00 AM. Beginning at 8 PM, the player can watch him perform, either by requesting a song or letting him choose a song. After the performance, K.K. Slider will give the player an aircheck of the song. If the player's pockets are full, then K.K. Slider will offer to sing another song again.
Special visitors

In City Folk
In Animal Crossing: City Folk, like in Wild World, The Roost appears in the basement of the museum, and purchasing coffee is identical to the previous game. New to City Folk is the option to have Brewster store the player's gyroids, which is unlocked the day after the player drinks their seventh cup of hot coffee; coffee left to cool does not count toward this. Additionally, on Valentine's Day Brewster serves hot chocolate instead of coffee. The Roost's layout is also slightly different; it is slightly deeper, a plant is added at the bottom-right, and another table and two chairs are added at the bottom-left.
Like in Wild World, K.K. Slider appears on stage at The Roost on Saturday nights, and the player can watch him perform by either by requesting a song or letting him choose a song. New options include the ability for the player to tell K.K. their mood ("Good!", "Grumpy...", "Lazy", "A little sad", or "It's hard to say"), after which he will play a song based on the selection. Additionally, the player can request encores after the initial performance, though only one aircheck can be obtained each week.
Special visitors
Like in Wild World, special characters can appear at The Roost, though now villagers from the player's town can as well.

In New Leaf
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, The Roost is now a public works project and standalone building, instead of being located in museum. In order to unlock the café as a public works project, the player must have already constructed the Museum Shop and have donated at least fifty items to the museum. After the shop has been open at least seven days, Blathers may be found thinking in the museum. When the player speaks to him, he will add the Roost café to the town's list of public works projects at the cost of 298,000 Bells.
The player can buy a cup of coffee for 200 Bells; after drinking four cups, the player is given the option of getting coffee to go. Buying coffee to go from the right side of the bar counts as the player's one purchasable cup per day. Special characters and villagers will sometimes be found in the café as in previous games, but in New Leaf, the player may have villagers visit from another town.
Special visitors
At certain times during the day, special characters will appear at the café. The following table shows who will appear and at what time.
Special character | Time |
---|---|
Pelly/ Pete | 6:00 AM – 6:55 AM |
Tortimer/ Dr. Shrunk | 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM |
Mr. Resetti/ Don Resetti | 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM |

DJ KK | 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM |
Phyllis/ Digby | 9:00 PM – 9:55 PM |
Gracie/ Kicks/ Tom Nook | 12:00 AM – 1:30 AM |
Part-time job
At the café, the player can get a part-time job after having seven cups of coffee. The player may work only from 11 AM to 11 PM, when no events are taking place in town. The player cannot work the first 7 days of October as Jack will be roaming the town, which counts as an event. On the job, the player will have a random selection of three villagers, from their town or another, and one special character, come and get coffee. Each animal has a combination of the three ingredients — coffee beans, milk, and sugar — that they like best. If the player satisfies the customers, coffee beans will be awarded by Brewster. As the player continues to keep customers happy, Brewster will reward the player with café-style furniture items, including four different special Brewster-themed gyroids.
If the player is wearing a wet suit or a Mii mask, it will not be removed, with the exception of working for the first time, where the player's Wet Suit will be removed.
Coffee preferences
Every special character and villager has a favorite combination of coffee beans, milk, and sugar. There are four different options for each category: coffee beans (Blend, Mocha, Kilimanjaro, and Blue Mountain), milk (lots, the regular amount, a little bit, and none), and sugar (three spoonfuls, two spoonfuls, one spoonful, and none). During the first few shifts the player works at The Roost, local villagers and special characters reveal one or two parts of their preferred coffee. After this grace period, however, only villagers from other towns reveal parts of their order, with these villagers always giving at least one hint, but sometimes two.
Coffee beans
Every time the player works, Brewster will reward the player with coffee beans, which can be sold for Bells or given to villagers to boost their friendship with the player. The three types of beans are normal (500 Bells), good (1,000 Bells), and superb coffee beans (2,000 Bells).
Furniture rewards
The café-themed furniture is rewarded by the total number of ingredients added correctly. The list below shows the furniture and the number of correct ingredients needed. A perfect day at the café would give 12 correct ingredients (4 customers times 3 ingredients each).
Furniture | Ingredients correct |

Coffeemaker | 16 |
Espresso maker | 32 |

In New Horizons
The Roost was added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the 2.0 Free Update. It was revealed in a teaser during the September 23, 2021 Nintendo Direct,[1] and more details were revealed in the October 15, 2021 Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct.[2]
Like in Wild World and City Folk, The Roost is located in the museum. One of the player's villagers living in the island may sometimes stay there for some time, sitting in one of the two chairs near the counter that the player cannot sit on. Special characters can occasionally visit and sit on one of those chairs as well, usually after the time they would normally leave the island (e.g. Daisy Mae will be in The Roost by 12 pm on a Sunday, which is the time she would stop wandering the island). Mabel and Sable can also stay in the café once Able Sisters is closed for the day. Orville, Wilbur, Kapp'n, Resetti, and Don can appear in The Roost at a set schedule, with the two lattermost characters being the only way to physically see them in-game without the usage of amiibo.
Villagers and special characters (including special characters who were initially cut from New Horizons) can be invited to The Roost if their amiibo is scanned via a phone in the café. Some characters invited via this method will bring along related characters. They would usually sit on The Roost's tables that the player is not allowed to sit on its chairs, as Brewster states it is only for special guests, some may sit on the chairs near the counter. Additionally, if a villager that has previously lived in the town is invited to The Roost, they will recognize the player and reminisce about their time on the island.
A cup of coffee costs 200 bells, and drinking it does not give the player any energy points. It is possible to drink more than one cup of coffee a day, although after drinking the second cup onward, Brewster will warn the player about doing it too much (though this will not have any in-game effects). The player can also order takeout coffee for 300 bells from the side counter after they have had a cup of coffee on three different days. The takeout coffee will be stored in the players pockets, and unlike the regular coffee, will give the player one energy point each time it is drank, with a maximum of three energy points. Talking to Brewster regularly also results in him gifting the player DIY recipes and coffee beans, as well as giving the player more options at the bar such as the possibility to let their coffee cool down or to add pigeon milk to it.
After buying and drinking the cup of coffee, depending on the time of day, Tom Nook, Isabelle, Timmy or Tommy, Mabel, Blathers, Orville, or Kapp'n may approach Brewster for their or someone else's takeout coffee (or food Timmy and Tommy) and then leave after a short talk with the player.
If the player consistently chooses to allow their coffee to cool, Brewster will eventually ask the player if they like their coffee at a lower temperature. If the player answers yes, the next time they order coffee at the bar, Brewster will offer to prepare their coffee at a lower temperature, which allows the player to immediately drink it at the temperature normally reached by letting it cool twice.
Visiting another island's coffee shop will allow the player to order takeout coffee regardless of the stated condition, in addition to drinking coffee from the tabletop. Additionally, it is possible to have multiple players enjoy coffee at once. This can be done by having all players sitting at the tables. The player to last sit is then given an option to either pay for everyone, or to have each player pay for their own.
In multiplayer, it is also possible for some players to be served water. This happens when there is not enough Bells to cover for everyone's or for one's own coffee, depending on the choice made above.
On the player's birthday, New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, or Toy Day, Brewster will say a special dialogue after the player drinks their coffee.
Unlocking
To unlock The Roost, the player must be the Resident Representative, have at least a 3-star island rating, the art wing of the museum must have been unlocked, and the player needs to have donated at least one item in each category (fish, bugs, sea creatures, art, and fossils) to the museum. Once these conditions are met, Blathers will suggest the idea of opening a café in the museum, and will ask the player to find Brewster.
To find Brewster, the player must pay Kapp'n 1,000 Nook Miles to visit one of his exclusive Mystery Islands. Brewster will be located somewhere on the island, and when the player speaks to him, informing him that Blathers sent them there, he will give them a Gyroid Fragment. The player can then return to Blathers and tell him that they found Brewster.
The museum will then be closed for renovations the next day, and will reopen the day after with The Roost added to the upper left on the top floor.
Blathers will not suggest the idea of opening a café during the International Museum Day Stamp Rally, even if all the other requirements are met.
amiibo visitor guests
The following is a list of guests a character brings when they are invited via the amiibo phone. Not all guests are reciprocal; for example, Digby brings Isabelle as a guest, but Isabelle does not bring any guests.
Item rewards
Items are given by Brewster based on the number of days the player has visited The Roost and purchased a cup of coffee.[nb 6]
# of visits | Reward |

In Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori
The Roost makes a minor appearance in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori and is based on its appearance in Animal Crossing: Wild World. The café is first seen when Ai visits The Roost to look for Apollo. While she is there, she meets Cesar and Cyrano, who are drinking coffee at the table. Later, after Margie moves away from Animal Village, Ai, who is grieving Margie's moving, returns to The Roost and orders a coffee; she is consoled by Whitney.
