"Stale Cupcakes" is a K.K. Slider song that first appears in Doubutsu no Mori e+. The song appears to be based off of sadcore, a variant of alternative rock originating from the 1980s. As the name suggest, songs within this genre are often slow and downbeat, which gives off a feeling of sadness. The aircheck is a quiet and melancholic song, with the only instrument being bells. The song's theme, as implied by its name, is sadness based upon the idea of forgotten snack foods.[1]
Album cover[edit]
The album cover for "Stale Cupcakes" features a back view of K.K. Slider looking upwards. The background and lighting on K.K. are blue, better reflecting the Japanese title of the song (ブルーおにぎり, Blue Onigiri). Vertical white illegible text appears above K.K.

Trivia[edit]
- Composer Kazumi Totaka spoke about the song in an interview about City Folk's soundtrack in volume 182 of Nintendo Dream.[1] He discussed the meaning of the Japanese title of the song, explaining he found the idea of a forgotten blue onigiri to be sad, and was able to compose the melody quickly after the idea.
