"Marine Song 2001" is a K.K. Slider song that first appears in Doubutsu no Mori e+. It is derived from Kapp'n's Song in Doubutsu no Mori+, which was altered in all localized versions of Animal Crossing to a tune based more on western sea shanties. The melody directly samples Kapp'n's vocals with newly added drums and shamisen backing. The number "2001" in the song's title alludes to the year that Doubutsu no Mori+ was released.

"Marine Song 2001" and "K.K. Robot Synth" are the only K.K. Slider aircheck songs that feature Animalese vocals. Additionally, because Kapp'n sings the shanties on his boat in Doubutsu no Mori+, it is one of two songs to have official lyrics, the other being "K.K. Bossa" which was given lyrics in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori.

Album cover[edit]

Album cover in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

The album cover for "Marine Song 2001" depicts K.K. Slider playing the guitar while riding in Kapp'n's boat as Kapp'n steers with a boat oar. The background features a sparsely cloudy sky brightened by the sun. On the e-Reader card, several player characters are seen in the sky.

Appearances[edit]

In Doubutsu no Mori e+[edit]

In Doubutsu no Mori e+, "Marine Song 2001" can only be requested and obtained from K.K. Slider if its e-Reader card is scanned at the Town Tune board. "Marine Song 2001" is not played in any villagers' houses. The aircheck version of the live performance can be obtained by speaking to Kapp'n after scanning the card.

In Wild World[edit]

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, "Marine Song 2001" is not played in any villagers' houses.

In the intro of Wild World, a remix of "Marine Song 2001" (officially referred to as "Heavy Rotation" on the Keke Choice! Mix CD) plays in Kapp'n's taxi. It alternates between the localized Animal Crossing version of Kapp'n's boat song and the original Japanese version, "Marine Song 2001."

In City Folk[edit]

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, "Marine Song 2001" is played in the houses of Ankha, Mott, and Scoot.

In the intro of City Folk, while riding in Kapp'n's bus with Rover, Kapp'n alternates between whistling the localized Animal Crossing version of his boat song and the original Japanese version, "Marine Song 2001." After about seven minutes he will whistle "Totaka's Song."

In New Leaf[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, "Marine Song 2001" is played in the houses of Ankha, Coach, Mott, and Scoot. It also plays in Kapp'n's RV.

Kapp'n will whistle the song after some time on the way to Club Tortimer, and eventually "Totaka's Song."

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, "Marine Song 2001" is played in the houses of Freckles and Joey. The aircheck of this song can be obtained from one of these villagers after visiting their house by their favor. This song's aircheck can also be purchased in Nook Shopping daily selection for  3,200 Bells.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, "Marine Song 2001" is played in the houses of Boots, Dobie, and Flip.

In Happy Home Designer[edit]

In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, "Marine Song 2001" is played in the houses of Flip, Grams, and Kapp'n.

Lyrics[edit]

The aircheck's vocals line up with these Japanese lyrics, provided again for comparison.

Because the vocals of the aircheck are taken directly from verses of Kapp'n's Song in Doubutsu no Mori+, sung with dialogue on Kapp'n's boat, "Marine Song 2001" technically has official lyrics. Doubutsu no Mori+ exclusively uses kana, and the Animalese syllables of the song line up with the vowel sounds in the lyrics. The aircheck consists of ten sets of two verses, which come from those sung to male players, before looping.

While the aircheck takes several verses from Kapp'n's Song, the live performance by K.K. Slider does not seem to correspond to any verses in that game. In Happy Home Designer, villagers singing along will repeat only one set of verses taken from the syllables sung by K.K., mismatched with the aircheck, while in New Horizons they properly sing the correct kana syllables for all ten verses along with the aircheck.

If you listen closely
you'll be able to hear it~
It's the same as always
but even so~
Today I'll sing again anyways
I, Kappei~
A dull kappa's
tale~

With my out-of-tune
singing voice~
I wish you happiness
every day~

To women and children,
act politely~
Being selfish
lowers a man's value~
When it comes to love
no matter what you say~
The sun will rise
again today~

Heart in turmoil,
awakening of love~
I'll see you in my dreams
over and over again~

A large sumo wrestler and
a small sumo wrestler~
A normal sumo wrestler and
other sumo wrestlers~
But of them all, the number one
strongest, the one who~
won't stop until victory
is me, Kappei!~

A raging soul
A sea shanty, for sure~
A little seasickness,
melancholy~

Saying ambitions
sounds good, but~
even a guy like me
has dreams too, you know~
I want to view the world
between my crotch~[nb 8]
An unachievable wish,
though, I know it to be~

It's a silenced fart
No, the fart's caught in my hand~
You know what, it doesn't matter
the kappa farts~

Feel the wind
your wind~
Do whatever you want,
go however you please~
You'll surely
run through~
Unmask yourself
and your manliness~

Have courage
and set out~
on a self-discovery
boat voyage~

Trivia[edit]

  • The aircheck of this song version is by far the longest of K.K. Slider's songs, as it continues without looping for nearly three and a half minutes. Although the melody remains the same, the "lyrics" to the verses sung by Kapp'n change.

  8. This lyric has a dual meaning using the word mata, here emphasized in katakana as マタ. It could simply refer to the conjunction また, having the sentence simply mean "And I want to grasp the whole world", or it could mean 股 (crotch/inner thighs), leading to a meaning of "I want to hold the world between my crotch", alluding to Kapp'n's more vulgar characterization as a kappa in Japan.
