The Farway Museum is a museum outside of the player's town in the Animal Crossing series. Its major appearance is in Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+, where players have to send unidentified fossils to in order to have them identified. The sole reason for this was that Blathers, the curator of the town's museum, was not qualified to do so. In subsequent games, he was given permission to identify these fossils, removing any need for the Farway Museum. Despite this, it is still referenced in Animal Crossing: Wild World and plays a small role in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Appearances[edit]

In Animal Crossing[edit]

In Animal Crossing, in order to correspond with the Farway Museum, the player must attempt to donate an unassessed fossil to Blathers. Blathers will contact the museum and the player will receive a letter the next day as long as they do not re-bury the fossil,[nb 1] allowing them to send in fossils for identification. The player can send as many fossils as they want to the Farway Museum in a single day. However, only three will be received the following day; the rest are delivered on succeeding days. Furthermore, the Farway Museum can only store up to thirty non-fossil items and thirty unidentified fossils for a single player. If an unidentified fossil or other item is mailed in when its respective return mail queue is filled, it will be lost.

Mailing a painting or assessed fossil to the Farway Museum will result in it being displayed in the player's town's museum. (Fish and insects cannot be attached to letters.) If the player mails an item already in the museum, a non-donatable item, or sends something while in another town, their item will be returned. Sending an invalid item can be useful for storing it at the post office, since the letter returning it will say what the attached item is without having to move the letter to the player's inventory and check.

In Wild World[edit]

While the Farway Museum does not appear in Animal Crossing: Wild World, it is mentioned by Blathers when he talks of how he acquired his job. He claims that no one from the Farway Museum would move to fill the post of curator at a new rural museum, so he was suggested for the job. He tells the player this after visiting and/or donating to the museum many times, as with many other special characters in the game. It is believed by many that the Farway Museum is a very prestigious establishment.

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Farway Museum is the institution that sends the player the DIY recipes for the golden net and golden rod once the applicable sections of the Critterpedia have been completed in full.

Notes[edit]

  1. The game's check to send the letter from the Farway Museum depends on them having an unidentified fossil in their inventory, house or town, not buried. This is why Blathers warns to not re-bury it.
