Sonny Resetti, commonly referred to as Mr. Resetti or simply Resetti, is a mole in the Animal Crossing series who appears in all games to date. Resetti's job prior to Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to make sure the player saves the game; if the player resets or quits without saving, he will appear outside their house to scold them. The more the player resets the game, the angrier he gets, yelling at the player more and for a longer amount of time. His first name is revealed to be Sonny in Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: City Folk by his calmer elder brother, Don. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where there is an autosave feature, Mr. Resetti no longer scolds the player for resetting and instead operates the Rescue Service.
Characteristics
Appearance
Mr. Resetti is a brown mole with black whiskers around his nose, and black, down-turned eyebrows with dark-brown linings. He wears a white shirt, blue overalls, black boots, and a yellow helmet. His hands and the tip of his nose are brown to dark-brown. He is shorter and fatter than his elder brother, Don. When not angry, he closes his eyes and his mouth, only showing black eyelids and small dark-brown lips, but when he is, he opens his eyes and mouth too wide, with his eyes being round-shaped and showing white sclera with black irises and small white pupils, and his mouth being square-shaped and showing white teeth, inside being red/brown/black and a pink tongue in the process.
Personality
Mr. Resetti is very short-tempered, always harshly yelling at the player for resetting or quitting without saving. When not angry, however, he is calm, polite and understanding. In later games, his anger is toned down.
Appearances
In Animal Crossing
- "Resetting... It's like... pressing an emergency call button. You press it and I gotta come read you the riot act. See?"
- — Mr. Resetti, Animal Crossing
Mr. Resetti makes his debut in Doubutsu no Mori and its enhanced port, Animal Crossing. When the player first resets, Resetti will thank the player for buying the game and introducing himself. On subsequent resets, he appears when the console is reset or the game is turned off without saving, appearing outside the player's house to give a lecture on why saving is important. If the player continues to reset, it will lead to him forcing the player through absurdist tactics, such as repeating a phrase or creating a fake reset. His brother Don appears in his place on the fifth reset.
Resetti also makes an appearance during the Groundhog Day event in February, acting as the "Groundhog" of the event to determine if he can see his shadow. Regardless, Resetti will always say that he has no shadow, and declares early spring to be on its way.
As a hidden appearance, if the player asks K.K. Slider to play a song between 8:45 and 8:50 PM, Resetti will briefly appear in the background during the performance. Additionally, only in Doubutsu no Mori e+, the player can access Resetti's Headquarters by smashing a random rock after having reset twice, exposing a hole that leads into the facility. Resetti, who will be surprised that the player discovered his hideout, quickly asks them to leave.
In Wild World
- "... You hate me, don't you? I mean, you just hate me more than anything, right? More than laundry, traffic jams an' bad breath all rolled together, right?"
- — Mr. Resetti, Animal Crossing: Wild World
Mr. Resetti returns in Animal Crossing: Wild World, playing the same role as in the GameCube game. Resetti can also be seen in The Roost of the museum on Sundays between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM, drinking coffee with a relaxed, calm attitude. If the player strikes up a conversation with him he will talk calmly about his work, apparently friendly while not on the job. In this game, he never mentions the "resetting," likely due to the Nintendo DS not having a reset button; he instead says to "save the game." After several resets, Resetti reveals he has a cousin named Vicious Vole Vinnie, who apparently has a shorter temper than him.
In City Folk
- "Uh, yeah, so anyway, this is Animal Crossing: City Folk. Thanks for pickin' it up. Appreciate the support. So, on behalf of everyone at Nintendo, I... Uh... Yeah... So... I mean, I, uh...Oh FORGET ABOUT IT!"
- — Mr. Resetti, Animal Crossing: City Folk
Mr. Resetti's role in Animal Crossing: City Folk stays the same as in previous games, by reminding the player to save whenever they reset. Additionally, he appears the second time the game is accessed by the player to talk about the importance of saving, regardless of whether the game has been turned off with or without saving. This is the only time in the game that he will appear by the player's house for something positive.
On random days in the city after 8 PM, the player is able to access Resetti's headquarters, called the Resetti Surveillance Center, by entering the rightmost tunnel normally blocked by traffic cones. On the first visit, Resetti will appear shocked that the player somehow found their way into his secret hideout, giving the player a Silver Shovel to leave the area. In subsequent visits, Resetti will occasionally appear with his older brother in one of the chairs situated in the area, chatting about a random topic with his brother. After a short while, the reset alarm will suddenly go off, prompting Resetti to pull back the chair he sits in, presumably to travel to the resetter's house.
In New Leaf
- "Yeah, here's the thing. The Reset Surveillance Center? It don't exist no more. When they were drawin' up the town budget for this fiscal year, folks were all like: "What's wrong with a little reset every now and then?" "We don't got the funds for this nonsense!""
- — Mr. Resetti, Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Mr. Resetti appears again in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, though he is now optional, due to Resetti's harsh tone in past games disturbing younger players.[1] The first time the player resets, Resetti will appear after Isabelle loads up the town, explaining the loss of the Reset Surveillance Center due to a lack of a budget, insisting that the player restores the Surveillance Center to its former glory to return to "unstoppable mole power." Once this session concludes, the Surveillance Center becomes available as a public works project when the game resumes.
If the player decides to fund the Surveillance Center, Resetti will appear the day after the project is completed, regardless of whether they reset or not. Additionally, for future resets, Resetti will ask why they reset in the first place, giving options from "I wanted to reset," "My batteries died," or "I don't remember." If the former is chosen, Resetti will give the player a long tirade as he does in previous installments. If the other options are chosen, however, Resetti will let the player off the hook and leave them alone.
As in City Folk, Resetti will sometimes be seen inside the open Surveillance Center after 9 PM (7 PM if the Early Bird ordinance is active). Don may appear on subsequent visits. After enough visits, both Resetti and Don will give their picture to the player.
In the Welcome amiibo update, his amiibo figure can be scanned to make his RV appear in the Campground.
In New Horizons
- "C'mon! Deep breath, Resetti... OK... Seeing as this is an emergency, I'll cover ya. No charge!"
- — Operator, Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Due to the auto-saving feature in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mr. Resetti no longer fulfills the role of lecturing players that do not save their game and, according to series director Aya Kyogoku, was laid off from his job at the Reset Surveillance Center.[2] Resetti instead operates the Rescue Service. Though his nametag reads "Operator," it does use his color scheme. Additionally, his voice and theme can be heard when the player uses the service and the app icon features a helicopter with his distinctive helmet and nose. If the player does not have enough Nook Miles to use the service, Resetti will refer to himself by name, telling himself to calm down before dropping the player off at a location of his choice.
Additionally, Resetti is implied to state one of the quotes for a 4-star island rating, saying, "Back in my day, the key to a good life was a low reset rate. Ya feel what I'm gettin' at? What I'm sayin' is, this here <island> ya got goin' on? This is one sharp locale! Got that?"
Mr. Resetti's first physical appearance in New Horizons is after the 2.0 Free Update, where he can appear at The Roost, be invited to the Paradise Planning island after the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC is installed, and be invited to Photopia.
Resetti's poster can be obtained from Nook Shopping after inviting him to Photopia via his amiibo, and beginning in version 1.7.0, the Resetti Model can be purchased from Nook Shopping from January 25 to February 2. Additionally, Mr. Resetti appears on the "Ongoing - Little Bro" variation of the Construction Sign item, and network lost error screen while player visit other player's island.
In Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori
Mr. Resetti has a minor role in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, as the "rule enforcer" of Animal Village. He first appears when Ai falls into Apollo's flower patch of blue roses. Resetti begins to yell at her, but he stops when she tells him it was an accident. After finding out she is looking for Apollo, he directs her to The Roost.
He appears again when Yū and Alfonso dig up fossils and Yū accidentally hits him with his shovel. He scolds them and says his tunnels are starting to cave in from their digging.
Resetti appears briefly during the Winter Festival, setting up holiday lights on trees.

- "What's the big idea treating me like an item, huh?"
- — Mr. Resetti, Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mr. Resetti appears as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where he will give the players a long lecture. His dialogue box obstructs either the top or bottom half of the screen. Mr. Resetti will also respond to stage events, such as characters falling asleep or getting knocked out. Attacking him for a while makes him angry and causes an explosion. He also appears as two trophies and one sticker.
Trophy information
Description | A mole wearing a hard hat who'll show up when you restart your game without having saved. He pops up and lets you know in no uncertain terms the importance of saving your game. The problem is, his speeches are entertaining enough to warrant breaking the rules at least once. In Animal Crossing, his brother Don appears too. He's the polar opposite of his sibling.

Acquisition | Random |
Description | A character who normally appears from underground to lecture the player. However, he is not always underground—in Animal Crossing: Wild World, he can be found sipping coffee at the Roost if you go at a certain time on a certain day. In the Japanese-only "e+" version, he works at a so-called "Resetti Observation Center" where you can pop in for a visit.

In Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8
Mr. Resetti appears as a course obstacle on the Animal Crossing track in the DLC pack Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8. He is found near the course's finish line, randomly popping out of the ground to impede racers, similar to Monty Moles, common enemies from the Mario series who also act as hazards in Mario Kart 8. If players run into him, they flip, which stuns them and causes them to lose speed. He does not appear in the winter version of the stage.

Controversy
The European Animal Crossing: Let's Go To The City instruction manual states that while intended to be humorous, Mr. Resetti may be frightening and/or disturbing to young children.
"Information for parents - Mr. Resetti
It is important that players save before switching off the Wii console in order to retain data after each play session (see Saving Data, above). If players switch off without saving, the character Mr. Resetti may appear upon restarting.
Mr. Resetti's purpose is to teach players the importance of saving. However, parents should be aware that his personality and tone of voice, while intentionally humourous, are authoritative and may be disturbing to young children."
In an Iwata Asks interview session, the directors of Animal Crossing: New Leaf admitted that Mr. Resetti was disturbing to some children and sometimes made young girls who were playing cry. Thus, they made the decision to lay off Mr. Resetti and have the option to include him back at the player's discretion.[1]
