In PG and , the lighthouse is found near the ocean and turns on when it starts to become dark. Once a year, in an event known as Tortimer's Vacation, the mayor will ask the player to turn on the lighthouse every night for seven nights. This is the only time the inside of the lighthouse can be seen. If the player turns the light on each day, Tortimer will reward the player.

*There is a way to glitch the game so that players can walk on the lighthouse. The way to do it is having one player run up and down on the right side of the light house and another player stand behind the light house and dig at the very end. When the player running up and down gets stuck behind the hole (that should not happen) the player should spin around until he or she gets on top. To get the other player up, the player that is on top must stand in a certain position to where he or he can dig down as the player that dug last time runs up and down until that player is up. If a player saves the game during this, the players will faint as if they were bitten by a tarantula or scorpion and visiting ones will  appear at the gate and the owner will appear at his or her home.

The lighthouse in Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing, the lighthouse appears from the start. Each January or February, Tortimer approaches the player with a request to enter the lighthouse and turn on the light each night for a week. This is the only time the lighthouse can be entered. If the player turns on the light each night, Tortimer rewards them with either the lighthouse model or chocolates.

In City Folk[edit]

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the lighthouse can be built through the town fund after 1,000,000 Bells are donated. Unlike in Animal Crossing, the lighthouse is purely decorative.

In New Leaf[edit]

The lighthouse in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the lighthouse can be built as a public works project for 372,000 Bells. Only one lighthouse can be built per town. Like in City Folk, the lighthouse is purely decorative.
