The toshikoshi soba (としこしそば, toshikoshi soba^?) is a furniture item in Doubutsu no Mori+. It can be placed on the surface of tables and other similar furniture that have surfaces for items.

The toshikoshi soba can be obtained from Tortimer on New Year's Eve. It does not have any color for the purpose of fêng shui.

No villagers have this item in their home.

Version differences

In Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+, the toshikoshi soba were replaced with the noisemaker.

Leftover dummy item

The dummy model used by unused items in Animal Crossing.

In Animal Crossing, the toshikoshi soba is still leftover in the game data as a dummy item, unobtainable without gameplay modification or glitches. It has the unused name "long-life noodle" and uses the dummy model, a white triangle with red Japanese text reading ダミー (damī, dummy). Its name was also translated to other languages in the European version of Animal Crossing, with the name "sopa suerte" in Spanish, "ramen" in French, "China-Pasta" in German, and "spaghetti" in Italian.

The item remains unused in Doubutsu no Mori e+, where, as with all dummy items in that game, its name appears as "かぐ？" (kagu?, furniture?) in the player's inventory. However, when dropped on the ground outside, its name from Doubutsu no Mori+ is shown. The item appears as the same dummy model but cannot be placed down in the player's house if in their inventory.

Toshikoshi soba (年越し蕎麦/としこしそば, Toshikoshi soba^?) is a Japanese dish served around ōmisoka, on December 31st, as a signal for good luck. It is primarily made with soba (そば/蕎麦, soba^?), a thin noodle composed from buckwheat that can be easily cut when eating, which represents the idea of letting go of hardships of the year. Some traditions also hold the belief that a long soba noodle symbolizes a long life.

Toshikoshi soba was first served during the Edo period of Japan, when merchants held a custom of eating Misoka soba (みそかそば, Misoka soba^?). Various regions in Japan often serve different type of toshikoshi soba, and either serve the noodles hot or cold. For instance, tempura soba is a popular variation of the dish, served with soba noodles, shrimp for a long life, and fried tofu for good luck.
