Nook's Cranny (タヌキ商店 Tanuki Shōten?, Tanuki Shop) is the first incarnation of Tom Nook's store. 'Nook's Cranny' is based on "nook and cranny", meaning a small corner or hole.
Here the players may buy and sell items for Bells, the in-game currency.
The store is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and in many games of the Animal Crossing series, the player has access to the shop from the start or early-on in the game.
Appearances
In Wild World
This store is also available as a model after the player has earned 300 points on the Tom Nook Point System in Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk.
In City Folk
In Animal Crossing: City Folk, Nook's store supplies a wallpaper, a floor, a flower seed, medicine, two pieces of furniture, three tools and some writing paper. In the back of store, two pieces of furniture stand alone. To the left of them is a long table that spans the whole the wall except for space for Nook's Point-Tracking System. In the middle there is a table for three tools. To the right of it is some vases. The store itself resembles a shed, made with wooden planks and held together with metal sheets. In fact, it is even stated that Tom Nook's shop may be Tortimer's old gardening shed that he used before he became mayor. It is the only one of Nook's shops without an automatic door.
The player must spend and/or sell a total of 25,000 Bells (30,000 Bells in Animal Crossing: City Folk) and play for at least eight days for an upgrade.
In New Leaf
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Nook's Cranny is replaced by Nookling Junction. Nookling Junction is functionally the same as Nook's Cranny.
In New Horizons
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nook's Cranny returns, but as in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, it is staffed by Timmy and Tommy. In order to build Nook's Cranny, the player needs to repay the first debt to Tom Nook. The following day, they need to talk to Timmy while he tells the player about this store and request to have the following materials: 30 Wood, 30 Softwood, 30 Hardwood and 30 Iron Nuggets. Timmy only accepts materials in their full stacks of 30, but does not require all four materials to be paid at once. After giving Timmy all the required building materials, Timmy asks the player to decide on the store's location. The store opens the next day, and the Nooklings and villagers may hold an opening celebration.
In New Horizons, Nook's Cranny has a drop-box outside, which allows players to sell items without walking into the store regardless of the store being open. As the player selects which items to deposit into the drop-box, they are shown the amount of Bells they are going to receive for the current submission, and for the day's total. The following is a description of how the drop-box works:
- Items sold via the drop-box are sold for 80% of their trade-in value due to "handling fees".
- Items sold via the drop-box cannot be returned once placed inside.
- Turnips may only be sold in-store. Hot item prices are only valid in-store.
- Payment is deposited into the players Savings Account in the ABD the following day. Bells can be accessed via the Nook Stop.
