The black maneki-neko (くろいまねきねこ kuroi maneki neko?) is a furniture item in Doubutsu no Mori, Doubutsu no Mori+, and Doubutsu no Mori e+. It is part of the Lucky Set in Doubutsu no Mori and Doubutsu no Mori+. It can be placed on the surface of tables and other similar furniture that have surfaces for items. It is replaced by the ceramic piggy bank in Dòngwù Sēnlín.

The black maneki-neko can be obtained from Crazy Redd's Furniture Emporium for  6,800 Bells,[nb 2] Wisp, a treasure hunt, or trees when the player has good luck. For the purpose of fêng shui, its color is special. This item is lucky, meaning it gives a 777-point Happy Room Academy bonus when placed in the player's house.

In Doubutsu no Mori, this item appears in the homes of Betty, Billy, Hector, Kabuki, Snooty, and Sven.

In Doubutsu no Mori+, this item appears in the homes of Betty, Billy, Hector, Kabuki, Snooty, and Sven.

For villagers who have this item placed on the floor in their house, there is a chance that the villager will gift it to the player.

Version differences

In Doubutsu no Mori e+, the Lucky Set was removed, so the black maneki-neko is not part of any furniture collection.

Leftover dummy item

The dummy model used by unused items in Animal Crossing.

In Animal Crossing, the black maneki-neko is still leftover in the game data as a dummy item, unobtainable without gameplay modification or glitches. It has the unused name "lucky black cat" and uses the dummy model, a white triangle with red Japanese text reading ダミー (damī, dummy). Its name was also translated to other languages in the European version of Animal Crossing, with the name "gato suerte gris" in Spanish, "chat N fétiche" in French, "Katze (schwarz)" in German, and "gatto nero" in Italian.

Real-life information

Real life image of a lucky black cat.

The maneki-neko (招き猫?), meaning beckoning cat, is a Japanese figurine said to give good luck to the owner. Usually made of ceramic or plastic, the cat is usually depicted under the Japanese Bobtail breed, but other variants were also created, including black to ward off evil, and yellow/gold for wealth. The cat holds a koban coin, and has one paw raised in a beckoning gesture; this paw may be mechanized to move back and forth.

The maneki-neko was thought to have originated from Edo (present-day Tokyo), where Imado dolls were sold in the region. The earliest known recording of the maneki-neko dates back to 1852, in the ukiyo-e piece Joruri-machi Hanka no zu. More information on this topic is available at Wikipedia.
