The dreadful painting (おそるべきめいが osorubeki meiga?) is a furniture item in Doubutsu no Mori, Doubutsu no Mori+, and Dòngwù Sēnlín.

In Doubutsu no Mori, the dreadful painting can be obtained from Crazy Redd's Furniture Emporium for  7,840 Bells,[nb 2] a treasure hunt, or trees when the player has good luck. It does not have any color for the purpose of fêng shui.

While the item still appears in Doubutsu no Mori+, it is unobtainable through normal means; it could only be obtained if the player used the Data Moving Service to transfer save data from Doubutsu no Mori that contained the item, and it does not appear in the catalog. It cannot be donated to the museum.

In Doubutsu no Mori, this item appears in the homes of Astrid, Freya, and Nosegay.

In Dòngwù Sēnlín, this item appears in the homes of Astrid, Freya, and Nosegay.

For villagers who have this item placed on the floor in their house, there is a chance that the villager will gift it to the player.

Version differences

Leftover dummy item

The dummy model used by unused items in Animal Crossing.

In Animal Crossing, the dreadful painting is still leftover in the game data as a dummy item, unobtainable without gameplay modification or glitches. It has the unused name "scary painting" (the same name as another painting item) and uses the dummy model, a white triangle with red Japanese text reading ダミー (damī, dummy). Its name was also translated to other languages in the European version of Animal Crossing, with the name "cuadro oscuro" in Spanish, "Renoir" in French, "Munch" in German, and "quadro spettrale" in Italian.

The item remains unused in Doubutsu no Mori e+, where, as with all dummy items in that game, its name appears as "かぐ?" (kagu?, furniture?) in the player's inventory. However, when dropped on the ground outside, its name from Doubutsu no Mori+ is shown. The item appears as the same dummy model but cannot be placed down in the player's house if in their inventory.

Unused dialog for attempted donation

Doubutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+ contain unused dialog for Blathers to tell the player if they attempt to donate the dreadful painting or novel painting, explaining that while it is a work of art, the museum has no room for it. There is code to check if the item donated is either the dreadful painting or novel painting and display this dialog if so, but it can never be triggered, since the item fails the game's "valid donation" check before it checks if it is one of those two paintings.[1] Because of this, Blathers simply says the standard dialog for any non-donatable item.

The dialog in Animal Crossing is as follows:

"Hmmm...yes. Ah. Well. There's no doubt this is <item name>, wot... But to be perfectly honest, there's simply no place for this within our collection. You see... Blimey, this is awkward! You see, it's not included on our list of must-have masterpieces. Which paintings we collect, and where they're displayed... It's all been decided. We just have no more space! It's my superiors, you see. There's absolutely nothing that I can I do about it. I'm truly, awfully sorry! I hate to do anything to curb your enthusiasm, but... My wings are tied, you see. I must return this to you. Now, personally, I believe this is a very valuable work of art. Priceless! One for the ages, eh wot? It would be wonderful if you would deign to display it in your home for the viewing pleasure of others."
