Pascal is a special character that appears first in Animal Crossing: Wild World and later in Animal Crossing: City Folk, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. He is a red sea otter, with a yellow muzzle, black nose, and wide black eyes; he wears a beige beanie hat and dungarees, and has an unknown shell around his neck, probably a scallop. His name is a reference to a French philosopher, Blaise Pascal; it may also be a reference to the measurement Pascal, also named after the philosopher, which is used to measure pressure underwater. It could also be derived from the word "scallop." In Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk he appears in the player's town on random weekdays from 6 AM to 12 AM.

Pascal is known for his philosophical tendencies, making him well known amongst the villagers in the player's town. Most of his philosophy is marine-themed. Every time the player talks to Pascal, he jumps into a river floating downstream until out of sight. Pascal gives away furniture from the Pirate Ship Theme, if conditions are met. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons he gives out Mermaid Series of DIY recipes, Clothing, or a Pearl when a Scallop is caught by the player.

Appearances

In Wild World

"The more you learn, man, the less you know."
— Pascal, Animal Crossing: Wild World

Pascal makes his debut in Animal Crossing: Wild World, in which he appears during random weekdays by the river mouth from 6 AM to 12 AM, where the player can listen to one of his diffuse and sometimes random thoughts. If a player decides to, Pascal will give them a piece of ship-themed furniture before performing a perfect dive into the sea and swimming off.

Pascal is a key member in the Wild World Golden axe trading event. In exchange for a scallop, which is obtained from Tortimer for a massage chair, Pascal will give players a golden axe or a photo of himself. He is one of seven special characters in Wild World who gives their picture out, the others being Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, Pelly, Phyllis, and Katie and Kaitlin.

Sometimes cranky villagers will state that when Pascal was little he got hit in the head with a soccer ball, and from then on, he started saying random philosophy. It is not known if this rumor is true.

In City Folk

"I used to be into rap music, maaaan, but it's hard to freestyle underwater."
— Pascal, Animal Crossing: City Folk

Pascal's role is largely unchanged in Animal Crossing: City Folk, as he still stands on one of the town's bridges on random weekdays from 6 AM to 12 AM. Though Booker will not tell players when he is in their town, the villagers will usually know. After sharing some philosophy, Pascal does a triple flip into the river, floating toward the sea, scaring any fish along the way. In this game, if the player is carrying a scallop when talking to Pascal, he will exchange it for a piece of ship-themed furniture, rather than the golden axe or his picture.

In New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pascal can be encountered when the player goes diving. If the player catches a scallop, Pascal will appear and ask to have it. If Pascal is given a scallop, he gives the player a piece of pirate furniture in return. He appears once per day and is absent on special days.

In New Horizons

While initially absent from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pascal was added in Wave 1 of the Free Summer Update. Similar to in New Leaf, he appears if the player finds a Scallop while diving and asks if he can have it. If the player gives him the Scallop, he will randomly reward them with a Mermaid DIY recipe, a piece of mermaid-themed clothing (A Mermaid Fishy Dress, Mermaid Princess Dress, Mermaid Shoes, or Mermaid Tiara), or a Pearl. After, he can be seen out of the border, swimming happily with his Scallop. If the player follows him, he can also be seen cracking it open and eating it. He will not appear if the player is visiting another player's island or while the gates are open.

Prior to New Horizons, he used to give the player a random furniture from the Pirate Series, this role is taken over by Gullivarrr.

Notably, Pascal's voice in this game is less deep than in previous games, sounding more akin to a smug villager.

In Pocket Camp

Pascal can be seen floating on the waters of Sunburst Island when on the cargo loading screen for Gulliver's travels.

In Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori

Tortimer talking to Pascal in Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori.

Pascal makes a brief appearance in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori. Tortimer finds him near the sea and asks for his support in the upcoming mayoral election in Animal Village. Pascal tells him to "go with the flow," then dives into the sea. He is voiced by Takashi Miike.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pascal appears as a spectator in the Smashville stage, and as a trophy.

Pascal

Description A sea otter in a knit cap. He'll spout philosophy seemingly littered with hidden meanings: "People study what can and can't be done, but I think they're missing the point, maaannn." He comes and goes via the sea, diving in with perfect form. It's really up to you to decide whether Pascal's ramblings are the results of deep thought or too much time spent chatting with scallops.

Pascal

Description NTSC-U: "People say there are always other fish in the sea, but, maaan, there are giant squids in there too." That's Pascal, ever the marine philosopher. He appears when a scallop is found, dispensing his philosophical thoughts and trading furniture for the scallop.

PAL: The philosophical wisdom of Pascal comes in all shapes and sizes. Some of his musings will leave you mildly puzzled: "You ever tried to play an oboe underwater, maaan? It ain't easy." Others will leave you flat-out baffled: "You can't fool physics, maaan. That guy knows EVERYTHING!" Give him a scallop and see what he says!
