Donating to the museum[edit]

As with all fish in the Animal Crossing series, the tilapia can be donated to the museum, followed by a small talk by Blathers about it.

In New Horizons[edit]

When donating to Blathers or selecting "Tell me about this!" in New Horizons, he will provide the following information about the fish:

"Wherever the waters are warm, the tilapia can be found. It is a highly adaptable river fish. They mainly feed on algae, but they will also eat larvae and dead fish— or whatever fits in their mouths. I will confess that, as a growing owlet, I similarly defined food as 'anything that fits in my beak.'"

Once donated to the museum, the tilapia can be found in the second level of the waterfall tank with the dace and stringfish.

Historically, they have been of significant importance in artisanal fishing in Africa, and they are of increasing importance in aquaculture and aquaponics. Tilapia can become a problematic invasive species in new warm-water habitats such as Australia, whether purposefully or accidentally introduced, but generally not in temperate climates due to their inability to survive in cold water.
