The novel painting (ざんしんなめいが zanshin na meiga?) is a painting in Doubutsu no Mori and Doubutsu no Mori+. In Doubutsu no Mori+, it is only available through the Data Moving Service, and it does not appear in the catalog. It is based on Piet Mondrian's 1942 Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue,[1] making it the newest work of art featured in the Animal Crossing series. Living from March 7, 1872 to February 1, 1944, Mondrian is also both the youngest artist whose work is featured in the Animal Crossing series and the most recent to die.

Although not confirmed by Nintendo, the reason for the novel painting's removal after Doubutsu no Mori+ may have been due to the painting's copyright status. Under Japanese copyright law at the time, works were under copyright for 50 years after the author's death; since Mondrian died in 1944, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue entered the public domain in Japan in 1995, six years before the release of Doubutsu no Mori.[nb 1] However, in the United States, where copyright lasts for 70 years after the author's death, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue was still under copyright as of the North American release of Animal Crossing in 2002 and did not enter the public domain until 2015. This was also the case for the dreadful painting, whose author also died in 1944.

Real-world information[edit]

Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue

Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue was one of many works in Dutch artist Piet Mondrian's portfolio which represented his pioneering of neoplasticism, a variant of the de stijl movement. Both emphasized extreme visual abstraction, stripping away traditional compositional techniques and focusing almost entirely on form through raw color; neoplasticism more specifically focused on visual balance through a heavy focus on right angles and primary colors. As such, Mondrian created numerous paintings in the vein of Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue, both with and without Composition titles of their own. Because of their highly distinctive composition, Mondrian's neoplastic paintings became icons of 20th century art and especially modern art.
