Nindori (ニンドリ?) is a jock ostrich villager in Doubutsu no Mori e+. He was created as a collaboration with Japanese gaming magazine Nintendo DREAM[1] as part of a reader contest to design a villager who would serve as the mascot for the magazine,[2][3] which began in Vol. 94 and had the winning design, by Suzukaze-san from Tokyo, announced in Vol. 100. Nindori can only move to the player's town if his e-Reader card, which was exclusively included in Vol. 102 of the magazine, is scanned.
Nindori's name is directly derived from Nintendo DREAM (ニンテンドードリーム, Nintendō Dorīmu), which is often abbreviated as Nindori. He has continued to be the magazine's mascot separate from the Animal Crossing series since he first appeared, and is often referred to as Nindori-kun. His species, specified as part of the design contest, may be a pun on 鳥 (tori), the Japanese kanji for bird.[nb 2] His catchphrase ドクソウ (dokusou) could either mean "originality" (独創) or "riding solo/doing thing one's own way" (独走), both referring to his origins. Nindori is currently the only ostrich who is absent from the series.
Characteristics[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Nindori is based after the orange variety of Nintendo GameCube released in Japan. As such, his body is orange with black-tipped wings and tail feathers. His eyes are very large, almost entirely black pupils with just a small portion of his sclera showing,[nb 3] somewhat like the GameCube's controller ports. The sides of his face have fanning vents, and the back has the lid used for inserting game discs. (Both of these are shown to be functional in Nintendo DREAM's manga.) Nindori has a few yellow feathers on the back of his head, and his beak and feet are yellow.
Personality[edit]
Below is a brief description of the jock personality. For more information, click here.
Nindori is a jock villager with an interest in fitness and sports, which he will mention frequently. He will get along with peppy villagers, but will not get along with lazy villagers due to their dislike of exercising.
Background[edit]
Nindori featured in a short manga series called Soreyuke! Nindori-kun (それゆけ!ニンドリくん? Let's Go, Nindori-kun!) in issues 100 (in which he was announced) to 102 (in which his card was released) of Nintendo DREAM. In it, he is seen running 100 laps (consistent with his jock personality) for a secret mission and meets a female human character. He falls down, causing the lid on the back of his head to open, worrying the girl. He assures her that where he comes from, this is normal, the same for his older sister Violet, his older brother Black, and his younger brother Silver. When the girl realizes these are other GameCube colors, she jokingly asks about his other siblings being a Hanshin Tigers fan or a green one interested in RPGs (referring to rare promotional GameCube colors tying in with the Hanshin Tigers' 2003 victory and the release of Tales of Symphonia, respectively), to which Nindori is shocked as they were just born. When asked about his mission, he reveals his directive on a letter from Saohen (nickname of Akinori Sao, editor-in-chief of the magazine): to act as ambassador from Nindori Village to their readers' villages carrying the motto "Follow your original ideas and dreams!", with the purpose of spreading the wonders of Doubutsu no Mori e+ and Nintendo DREAM!

Trivia[edit]
- Nindori's e-Reader card contains several references:
- His birthday is given on his e-Reader card as September 14, the date the Nintendo GameCube released in Japan. Villagers were not given individual birthdays until Animal Crossing: Wild World, meaning other villagers who have not appeared since Doubutsu no Mori e+ have unknown birthdays. Nindori-kun's official Twitter account bio also states this is his birthday, as has Nintendo DREAM's website.[4]
- Likewise, he shares his birthday with Ricky.
- Nindori's e-Reader card also says he is one of four siblings, referring to him representing an orange GameCube, and the other three main colors for the console: violet, black and silver. In the Soreyuke! Nindori-kun manga, his siblings based on these other colors are depicted.
- The description furthermore says he was inspired by a great person somewhere, referring to the fact that he was chosen in a competition for fans to create a mascot for Nintendo DREAM.

ニンドリ Nindori |
Abbreviation for Nintendo DREAM magazine from "ニンテンドードリーム (Nintendō Dorīmu)." Also possibly from "~鳥 (-dori)," the suffix for Japanese bird species. |

Notes[edit]
- ↑ Nindori
- ↑ Due to rendaku, it is often pronounced dori when part of a species name. This makes one possible reading of Nindori's name "Nin-bird" or "Nintendo bird".
- ↑ Although it appears as though he has "hollow" eyes similar to Coco, the animations for Nindori's eyes make it clear he simply has extremely large pupils.
