Gulliver is a gull in the Animal Crossing series. His only function is to reward the player with special furniture, usually artifacts from around the world that cannot be obtained anywhere else in the game. His name is a play on words to the fact that he is a gull, as well as a reference to Gulliver's Travels, a book by Jonathan Swift about a man who travels to the far corners of the earth, before being shipwrecked and washing up on the shore of a previously undiscovered land.
Appearances
Doubutsu no Mori and Animal Crossing
- "Aaaah...Uuuuh..."
- — Gulliver, Animal Crossing
Gulliver first appears as a sailor in Doubutsu no Mori and in Animal Crossing. Gulliver can sometimes be found lying on the beach, and must be first woken up by talking to him multiple times. He then tells the player an unbelievable and dramatic story about his adventures at sea, sometimes involving a giant squid which is assumed to be a jellyfish. After listening to him, Gulliver will give the player a random furniture item to express his gratitude. In Animal Crossing, Gulliver instead gives a rare piece of furniture to the player. In the Japanese version of the game, Gulliver speaks entirely in katakana, meant to symbolize that he is foreign and not speaking Japanese. He may even speak coherent english in the middle of his sentences.
It is also possible for the player to see Gulliver floating in the ocean during a trip to the Island. When the player returns, Gulliver will likely be located somewhere along the beaches.
Animal Crossing: Wild World
- "Mommy...Is that you? Gimme 5 more minutes, Mom..."
- — Gulliver, Animal Crossing: Wild World
In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Gulliver is no longer a sailor, but an astronaut that infrequently flies over the player's town in a typical UFO styled spacecraft, called Porpoise, a possible reference to the ship that Captain Olimar uses in the Pikmin series, called the Dolphin. The player can shoot him with a slingshot, causing him to crash somewhere in the town. The screen cuts to the scene of the crash, which is always situated on top of one of the signposts that are scattered about the town. After being woken up, Gulliver does a quick survey of his craft, revealing that five parts are missing. These parts, which are dotted around town in the form of cogs called a UFO part, must be recovered by the player in exchange for a rare item. Gulliver and his spaceship then disappear the next time the game is played.
It should be noted that he does say that he hopes the player will see him off the next morning, even though he goes the next time the player plays again.
Animal Crossing: City Folk
- "Ugh...Gimme a break...There's no...No school today..."
- — Gulliver, Animal Crossing: City Folk
In Animal Crossing: City Folk, he retains the same appearance as before in Animal Crossing: Wild World. His spacecraft can be seen flying about the same height as a floating balloon, though much faster. The player can shoot at him with a slingshot, causing his ship to malfunction and appear the next day on the beach. During this time, a piece of his spacecraft will land somewhere in the town. He takes a while to regain consciousness, usually about five attempts of talking to him. When he wakes up, he will survey his surroundings and make unusual remarks about the player's appearance. He will ask the player for help, to find his spaceship part, which appears as a small, cog-like item on the ground called a 'spaceship part'. When given the part for his ship, he will give the player one of his rare items.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- "No! That's the left! Starboard's on the right...It's because starfish are right-handed...Zzzz..."
- — Gulliver, Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Gulliver appears in Animal Crossing: New Leaf as he does in Animal Crossing, with his sailor outfit, washing up on the shore of the beach. To wake him up, the player may either use the megaphone and say his name into the 3DS's microphone, or try to talk to Gulliver a number of times. Once awoken, he will ask the player where he was heading before he washed up on shore, providing the player with key information about his destination, a country in the real world, such as the United States or France. When answered, Gulliver may send a letter the next day containing a present from the country he is visiting. If Gulliver notes that the guess is incorrect, he will send a letter containing a chocolate coin.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
Gulliver appears in Pocket Camp, again as a sailor. He will show up on Sunburst Island with his boat and ask the player to give him old, unwanted furniture and clothing rather than selling it. If they give him 10 items, he will set sail on his boat for a few hours. When he returns to Sunburst Island, he will always give the player snacks as a reward for helping him. If the player gave Gulliver items he deemed "great" then Gulliver will sometimes return with a new villager that is automatically befriended and can be invited to the player's campsite at any time.

Trivia
- In the first game, Gulliver tells a story where he states "When I fought the sea snakes at Pinnacle Rock! Wait a minute... That wasn't me!", as a reference to fellow Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
- Gulliver also comments on how he left his Goldfish in Toad Town and Hyrule.
- In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, he says "I haven't met such a noble skipper since old Bobbery of Rogueport!" and "I haven't met someone so willing to help a total stranger since the residents of Ricco Harbor!" He also says "Hoo, now Isle Delfino! THAT was a nice beach to wash up on..." Bobbery was a character in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Isle Delfino was the setting of Super Mario Sunshine, containing a port called Ricco Harbor. Also, Yoshi's Island is one of the many locations the player can guess where Gulliver had been. When waking Gulliver, he may say, " Am I in the Overthere?" The Overthere is an equivalent to the heavenly afterlife from Super Paper Mario. He may describe himself as being in "a fuzzy pickle", referring to the famous catchphrase of the Photo-Man from EarthBound. If he was heading to Italy and the player guesses correctly, Gulliver will say he will (thanks to the player) eat lots of pasta like that "plumber guy".
