DeNA is a public Japanese company that develops mobile applications and e-commerce websites.

Nintendo partnership

In 2015, DeNA partnered with Nintendo and announced their plan to release five new smartphone games by March 2017 that feature Nintendo's characters.[1] As part of the partnership, Nintendo bought 10% of DeNA, while DeNA bought 1.24% of Nintendo.[1]

During the launch, Nintendo and DeNA emphasized that Nintendo would still focus on dedicated gaming systems and that old games would not be ported over into these mobiles apps. In a statement, DeNA stated:

To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.

On April 27, 2016, Nintendo announced the first two of the planned DeNA mobile games. One based on the Fire Emblem series and the other based on the Animal Crossing series.[2] The latter game would later be revealed as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and was launched worldwide in November 2017.
