Money Trees are a type of tree in SER. To grow them, the player buries a bag of money using a golden shovel. After the tree is grown, if it blooms there will be three bags of the amount of bells you planted or 30,000 bell bags, whichever is lower. The tree will only bloom, and thus produce money, once.

In , PG, and , money trees can be grown by burying Bells in a shining spot with any shovel. If the tree grows, it will bear three Bell bags of the same value that as the one that was buried. Since the largest Bell bag value is 30,000, a maximum of 90,000 Bells can grow on a money tree, for a profit of 60,000 Bells.
The trees likelihood of blooming is based off of the amount of bells buried. The maximum number of bells a tree will produce is 90,000 bells, meaning that it is pointless to bury more than 90,000 bells. Unfortunately, Money Trees are not statistically profitable. It is like gambling at a casino--if you play long enough, you will lose. This is because though the Money Tree's chance to bloom, which varies upon how many bells you originally buried, the expected return will never exceed the amount you invest.

Given this data, the most advantageous amount to bury would be 30,000 giving you a 90% probability of tripling up. This is because

Since the largest Bell bag value is 99,000, a maximum of 297,000 Bells can grow on a money tree, for a profit of 198,000 Bells.
*To minimize your expected loss it is best to bury an amount between [30,000 to 90,0000] because the Expected Return is 90% of your investment. Less and the reward drops with the probability resulting in a lower expectation; more and you are removing the random probability from it (100% chance) and sealing your fate at a return of 90,000 bells.

*To maximize your potential gain it is best to bury an amount between [100 to 30,000] because if your gamble is successful your reward is triple your investment.

Use of a Clover
When visiting a boat tour island, there is a 5% chance that the hardwood trees on the island will be money trees bearing three bags of 1,000 Bells.
A 4-leaf-clover planted underneath the money tree will not increase the probability of the tree blooming and producing money. It will only prevent the tree from wilting; as it would for a normal tree.

Dealing with Deforestation
+
References
The ability to grow money trees is tremendously useful with dealing with large amounts of deforestation, possibly caused by the player due to an inconvenient tree layout. With 10,000 bells, over 100 trees can be planted in one day. Though this is slightly more expensive than purchasing saplings from Tom Nook, it is much quicker.

Other appearances

Money trees are trees in the Animal Crossing series that bear three bags of Bells when grown. They can be grown by burying Bells, and the exact requirements to grow one varies between games. Once the Bells have been shaken from the tree, it becomes a regular hardwood tree. Money trees first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori+ and have appeared in all subsequent mainline games.

Appearances[edit]

In the first-generation games[edit]

In Doubutsu no Mori+, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+, money trees can be grown by burying Bells in a shining spot with any shovel. If the tree grows, it will bear three Bell bags of the same value that as the one that was buried. Since the largest Bell bag value is 30,000, a maximum of 90,000 Bells can grow on a money tree, for a profit of 60,000 Bells.

In Wild World[edit]

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, money trees can be grown by burying Bells with a golden shovel. If the tree grows, it will always bear three bags of 30,000 Bells, regardless of the amount buried.

In City Folk[edit]

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, money trees can be grown by burying Bells with a golden shovel. If the tree grows, it will always bear three bags of 30,000 Bells, regardless of the amount buried. No more than one money tree can be grown per day, for a maximum profit of 89,000 Bells.

At the minimum of 1,000 Bells buried, there is a 1% chance a tree will grow. This increased by 1% for every 1,000 Bells buried. Having yellow fêng shui increases the chance.

In New Leaf[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, money trees can be grown by burying Bells with a golden shovel. If the tree grows, it will always bear three bags of 30,000 Bells, regardless of the amount buried. No more than one money tree can be grown daily, for a maximum profit of 89,000 Bells. Below is a table explaining the percentages and how to increase them.

1,000 Bells buried  +1,000 Bells Per Fêng shui Point If Bell Boom ordinance

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, money trees can be grown by burying any amount of Bells in shining soil with any shovel. The money tree is now guaranteed to bloom regardless of what value of Bells the player has buried in the soil, so long as it is planted in a location where a tree can normally grow. Below is a table of the Bells buried and the resulting trees:[1]

Bells buried Bells on tree % chances
Less than or equal to  1,000 Bells  1,000 Bells 100%
99k Bells NH Inv Icon cropped.png 1,001– 9,999 Bells 3× amount buried 30%
 3,000 Bells 70%
Greater than or equal to  10,000 Bells 3× amount buried 30%
 10,000 Bells 70%

Since the largest Bell bag value is 99,000, a maximum of 297,000 Bells can grow on a money tree, for a profit of 198,000 Bells.

When visiting a boat tour island, there is a 5% chance that the hardwood trees on the island will be money trees bearing three bags of 1,000 Bells.
