Splatoon is a series of third-person shooter video games developed by Nintendo that has crossover content in the Animal Crossing series. The Splatoon series was produced by Hisashi Nogami, longtime director and producer of the Animal Crossing series. Beginning in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, items based on Splatoon have appeared; three villagers based on Splatoon characters also appear exclusively in Welcome amiibo. Splatoon crossover content has also appeared in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
Villagers
The following three villagers are based on the Splatoon series and appear exclusively in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo:
- Cece – A peppy squirrel based on Callie. She can be summoned if the Callie amiibo figure is scanned. She is Viché's younger sister.
- Viché – A normal squirrel based on Marie. She can be summoned if the Marie amiibo figure is scanned. She is Cece's older sister.
- Inkwell – A jock octopus based on an Inkling. He can be summoned if the Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, or Inkling Squid amiibo figures are scanned.
Appearances
In Welcome amiibo
The three Splatoon villagers appear in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo. If their corresponding amiibo figures are scanned, they can be invited to the campground or asked to move in. Their RVs contain items based on the series.
In New Horizons
While no Splatoon crossover content appears in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, two of the three possible catch quotes for the Squid reference the series:
- "I caught a squid! It's off the hook!"
- "I caught a squid! I had an inkling I might!"
The former is a reference to Off the Hook, the pop music band from Splatoon 2, while the latter references the Inkling species.
Additionally, Blathers's description of the Eusthenopteron fossil references the Splatoon series: "Imagine if we'd not left the oceans... How might fashion and music be different in an aquatic world? How would we resolve differences? Perhaps some sort of ink-squirting contest of champions?"
In Happy Home Designer
While no Splatoon crossover content appears in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Octavian's house request greatly references many elements from the first Splatoon game.
In Pocket Camp
In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, a Splatoon 2 crossover event started on September 13, 2018 and lasted several weeks. Inkling's Splatted Cookie was available from September 13, 2018 to October 11, 2018, giving items from the Splatoon 2 (Fortune Cookie) Set. From September 13, 2018 to September 25, 2018, players could participate in the Blitz Clam Scavenger Hunt event, collecting Blitz Clam (a nod to Clam Blitz) in order to obtain items from the Splatoon 2 (Blitz Clam) Set. From September 19 to September 26, 2018, Chip hosted Fishing Tourney #6, where players could catch Pink Squids, based on Inklings, and Purple Octopuses, based on Octolings, and earn items from the Splatoon 2 (Fishing Tourney) Set.
