Talk:Nice painting (Doubutsu no Mori+)
Issues regarding the name of this page[edit]
I would like to bring up a very glaring issue about this naming of this article and its respective item page: they are apparently spilling invalid information from {{PGFurnitureVillagers}}. Although I was thinking of just fixing {{PGHouse}}, I'd figured the best shot to preventing this would be to move the article to a new name, and likely based on DeepL translation the name would be "Well-Known Painting". I would like to hear your thoughts on this issue. -- PanchamBro (talk • contributions) 07:32, June 16, 2022 (EDT)
- The Japanese name of the item is いいめいが. Chubby Bub clarified the following Japanese information in a discussion involving this topic in the spreadsheet Discord, so I'll copy-paste it here for posterity:
- いい = good, fine
- めいが = well-known painting, masterpiece
- All paintings are referred to as [adjective] めいが.
- So it seems appropriate to keep using the name "Fine Painting." This is definitely unfortunate due to the localizers introducing Fine Painting (PG), which is causing the template problems, but it might be better to leave Fine Painting (DnM+) as it is. Potentially re-translating the DnM+ item to Good Painting would help to differentiate it, but it sounds less professional. (But maybe renaming it to Good Painting would still be a good idea just to avoid confusion between the 2 paintings overall.) HylianAngel (talk) 18:09, June 17, 2022 (EDT)
- The more I think about it, I think it might be better just to rename it to "Good Painting," even if the translation is slightly worse. Since Fine Painting (PG) and fan-translation Fine Painting (DnM+) are completely unrelated (different Japanese names). It would help to at least alleviate some confusion, because as it is now sharing the same name, people might be under the false impression the paintings are related. - Although another thing to keep in mind that there is a very real possibility that a future Animal Crossing game will introduce an item called "Good Painting," and it would be slightly painful to have to keep changing this item's name to avoid sharing names with English-localized items. HylianAngel (talk) 18:22, June 17, 2022 (EDT)
- Does anyone have any objections with moving this page to "Good Painting"? HylianAngel (talk) 03:52, June 27, 2022 (EDT)
Rename this page to "Nice Painting (Doubutsu no Mori+)"[edit]

This item (いいめいが, ii meiga) was not present in Animal Crossing, so it did not receive an official localization by Nintendo of America. During the organization of the community ACGC Spreadsheet, it was deemed that "Fine Painting" would be an acceptable translation of the item's name, as いい (ii) has multiple meanings, including "fine," while めいが (meiga) roughly translates to "masterpiece" and is the in-game equivalent for "Painting." There are currently 2 issues with using the name "Fine Painting."
- From Animal Crossing to New Leaf, there is an item called "Fine Painting." The Japanese name is completely different (たいへんなめいが, taihen na meiga). As such, the current community translation conflates these two paintings together, when they have absolutely no relation. It's better to avoid introducing confusion by using an alternate but still appropriate translation.
- Like mentioned by PanchamBro in the previous topic, Item:Fine Painting (Doubutsu no Mori+) (いいめいが) sharing its name with Item:Fine Painting (Animal Crossing) (たいへんなめいが) is causing issues with {{PGFurnitureVillagers}}. If "Fine Painting" was the official name or the only possible translation for いいめいが, then it would be better to fix the template. But "Fine Painting" is neither an official translation nor the only possible translation for いいめいが.
Although the current design of いいめいが was discontinued after the GameCube games, Japan still has an item called いいめいが: this painting was officially translated as the Nice Painting in Wild World. いい is a flexible word with multiple meanings, and it can be translated as "good," "excellent," "fine," or "nice."
I propose renaming this page to "Nice Painting (Doubutsu no Mori+)" and renaming Item:Fine Painting (Doubutsu no Mori+) to Item:Nice Painting (Doubutsu no Mori+). HylianAngel (talk) 01:16, July 2, 2022 (EDT)
