Horned hercules
The horned hercules (known as the hercules beetle prior to New Leaf) is a bug in the Animal Crossing series introduced in Doubutsu no Mori e+. As with many rare stag beetles, it is found in palm trees and usually from late afternoon through early morning. It is tied with the golden stag and the giraffe stag as the most valuable bug in the Animal Crossing series, selling for 12,000 Bells. Due to this, the insect is sensitive to movement the player makes. The player must move slowly, even slower than max crouching speed, to be close enough to catch the horned hercules.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it appears from mid to late summer.

Donating to the museum[edit]
Blathers makes these comments when the insect is donated to the museum.
In Wild World[edit]
In City Folk[edit]
After donation, the hercules beetle can be found on the second tier of the insect section in the first enclosure, walking on the tree stump towards the back. Once the golden stag has also been donated, both will fight on the stump, picking each other up and tipping one another over.
In New Leaf[edit]
In New Leaf, the horned hercules is found in the right-hand back room on the large tree stump in the center. If the golden stag is also donated, the two will be fighting each other. The exhibit has this to say about the horned hercules:
In New Horizons[edit]
Commissioning a model[edit]
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, if the player brings three horned herculeses to Flick to commission a model, he will say the following:
"R-really? You want a sculpture of a horned hercules? The sublime spear of the heavens? Its mottled shell is a reflection of the negative sky of the Infested Realms it defends with its mighty horn! I promise this will be my pokey-est masterpiece, and I shall title it The Grand Horned Hercules!"

Real-world information[edit]
The hercules beetle is the most famous and largest of the rhinoceros beetles. It is native to the rainforests of Central America and South America. The size of this beetle includes the length of its horn, which without would make it considerably smaller than other species. Some females can exceed the size of the male Hercules beetle by body alone. The hercules beetle is considered the strongest creature on earth relative to its size–it can handle 850 times its own body weight. They eat decaying fruit and the larvae of the beetle spends one to two years tunneling into rotten wood.

Notes[edit]
- ↑ All bugs and fish in the first-generation games can appear at a lower spawn rate up to five days before the start of their first month of availability.
- ↑ Possibly due to a developer oversight, tree insects can not spawn on palm trees, or fruit trees that do not currently bear fruit. Due to its exclusivity to Animal Island, catching the Hercules Beetle requires planting a non-palm tree on the island.
