The Moody Painting is a copy of Millet's painting, The Sower. Available in City Folk, it is the second of Millet's paintings to be featured, the other being the Common Painting. As this painting is available only from Crazy Redd's, along with its forgery.
A pioneering work of Realism, this oil painting, completed in 1850, shows a glum-looking peasant sowing seeds in a field. This image of poverty enraged the upper classes of France at the time, who criticized his work for showing how workers struggled- many paintings at this time expressed an idyllic middle-class life, full of color and warmth.
The Animal Crossing name for the painting is very appropriate- the dark colors and exhausted expression of the man serve to evoke dismay in his condition, and expose the hardship and simplicity of rural life in 19th century France.
The Sower is now on display in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.
