- "Boot" redirects here. For the villager, see Boots.
Trash are items in the Animal Crossing series that can be caught while fishing. There are three types of trash that can be caught in every game: the Boot (known as the Old Shoe in Animal Crossing), the Empty Can, and the Old Tire (known simply as the Tire in Animal Crossing). In games prior to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they cannot be sold for any Bells and mostly just take up pocket space. They, like Rafflesia and rotten turnips, can be used to attract flies. If dropped on the ground, trash will decrease the environment rating. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, trash can be sold and used for various DIY recipes.
Appearances
Doubutsu no Mori, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+
In Doubutsu no Mori, Animal Crossing, and Doubutsu no Mori e+, trash is rarer than in the other games. When pulled from the water, each trash item has the unique appearance, though when dropped, all types of trash appear as a pile of garbage.
Animal Crossing: Wild World
In Animal Crossing: Wild World, trash is much more commonly encountered. Trash cannot appear in the recycling bin.
Animal Crossing: City Folk
In Animal Crossing: City Folk, trash is uncommon. It serves the same purpose as in previous games.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, trash stays largely the same as in Wild World and City Folk, though an 80 Bell fee is required to dispose of it when selling, instead of it being free. Once the player acquires a trash bin from a public works project or by gift or purchase, the bin can be used to remove the trash without a fee. Other players can also use the trash bin inside another player's house to remove the trash. If the Keep [Town Name] Beautiful Ordinance is in effect, trash will not appear. Additionally, fishing out trash and disposing of it at Re-Tail increases the approval rating.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the player is no longer charged for trash disposal and can sell Boots, Empty Cans and Old Tires for 10 Bells each. Several DIY recipes incorporate trash into them, making trash more useful besides simply attracting flies or affecting the town/island rating. An example of such incorporation is a pair of Recycled Boots. Upon catching a boot for the first time, the player mentions that they "could probably wear these if [they] found another boot," and that they have "an idea for a DIY recipe!" Catching various pieces of trash will allow the player to learn DIY recipes that use trash.
DIY recipes
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are various DIY recipes that use trash. All of these recipes can be obtained by catching varying amounts of trash.

Disposal
There are several ways to dispose of trash:
- The player can send it as a gift to a neighbor.
- The player can send it to a friend's town.
Prior to Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- The player can go to Tom Nook and sell it to him. He will say that he is unable to buy it, but he can dispose it.
- The player can sell Tom Nook the trash along with the other item(s). Nook will make no mention about the trash.
- The player can dispose it in the Recycling Bin or Town Dump, and it will be gone by the next pickup time.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- The player can sell it to Reese at Re-Tail. She will say that she is unable to buy it, but can dispose it for a fee of 80 Bells.
- The player can dispose the trash by putting it in the trash can (after unlocking and building the trash can by public works project or if there is a trash can in any player's home).
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- The player can sell it to Timmy and Tommy at Nook's Cranny for 10 Bells.
- The player can use trash in their DIY recipes in order to craft furniture or items.
- The player can dispose the trash to a trash can furniture (e.g. Trash Bin).
