In short, data mining has indicated that the scale goes from 0 to 255, with six different ranges mapping to different levels of friendship. A new villager starts at 25 points, near the top of the first friendship level (0-29). "Good" friendship (levels 3-4) requires 60 points. "Best" friendship (levels 5-6), which is required to be able to obtain photos (pictures), usually takes much longer to reach, requiring 150+ points.

Improving Friendship
+
At 150 friendship points, a villager has a 6% chance of giving the player their photo when they give them an item. This chance increases by .04% for each friendship point until reaching a maximum of 255 (10.2%).
The player's friendship level can be increased by doing tasks that make them feel better, such as talking to them daily, giving them gifts (in most cases), sending them letters, or doing favors for them. Conversely, acting rudely towards villagers, such as by talking to them too much, refusing or failing to complete favors, yelling in their face with a megaphone (short only), giving them trash as a gift, or hitting them with a net, lowers the player's friendship level with the villager. The exact actions that affect friendship may vary by game.

Actions that decrease friendship
+
*−1 point — offering medicine to the villager when sick without actually having any
When the player waves at a villager in short or short, the villager responds in a way that indicates their friendship level. In order to wave at a villager, the player taps them using the touch screen (short) or the Wii Remote (short) when they are at least five spaces away from them. A villager who dislikes the player will ignore them, and either a piano crash or blowing wind will sound, depending on the personality. One who likes the player will bow (normal and lazy villagers), or they may wave back.
+
*−1 point — ending a treasure hunt without finding the buried item before talking to the villager again
 +
*−2 points — giving the villager trash as a gift during a conversation
 +
*−3 points — repeatedly pushing the villager or hitting them with a net until they tell the player to stop
 +
*Special quests (delivery):
 +
:*—1 point (giver) — unsuccessful delivery but present is still wrapped
 +
:*—2 points (giver) — unsuccessful delivery + present is opened
 +
:*—3 points (giver) — unsuccessful delivery + present is not even in the player's pockets
 +
*−5 points — giving the villager trash as a gift during their birthday party

In short, villagers with low friendship may not show ongoing dislike of the player in the same way, though any villager can be upset for a time by player behavior such as hitting with a net. The current friendship level may be inferred from certain activities which are only available at or above a specific level. For example, the ability to give a gift each day during conversation is unlocked at level 2 (30+ points), and beginning at level 4 (100+ points) the villager might ask occasionally if the player wants to change that villager's catchphrase. Additionally, when leaving a villager's house, they may wave faster or with both arms after reaching higher friendship levels, though the exact correlation is less clear and the behaviour may vary based on villager personality.

Friendship is a value in the Animal Crossing series that reflects how close a villager is to the player. Friendship is generally increased the more the player interacts with a villager, and having a high friendship level with a villager changes the way they interact with the player.

Appearances[edit]

In Animal Crossing[edit]

In Wild World[edit]

In City Folk[edit]

In New Leaf[edit]

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, friendship is measured on a scale from 0 to 255.[1] The default friendship value with any villager is 25. As friendship increases, more interactions are unlocked and more friendship points are earned from giving gifts and completing favors.

At 150 friendship points, a villager has a 6% chance of giving the player their photo when they give them an item. This chance increases by .04% for each friendship point until reaching a maximum of 255 (10.2%).

Actions that increase friendship[edit]

 • +1 point — speaking to the villager for the first time each day
 • +5 points — catching a flea off the villager
 • Giving the villager a gift during a conversation
 • +3 points — any furniture item
 • +2 points — a flower, bug, fish, watering can, fishing rod, their favorite song, or a clothing that has one of their favorite colors or styles, umbrella to a non-frog villager
 • +1 points — any other item that is not trash, umbrella to a frog villager[nb 1]
 • An extra point is given if the item is wrapped
 • An extra point is given if the item's value is between 250 and 749 Bells
 • 1–3 extra points are given if the item's value is 750 Bells or more, depending on the friendship level (see table below)
 • Giving the villager a gift on during their birthday party
 • 5 points — An item they already own; a clothing item currently worn by the player; an edible item; a bug, fish, or fossil worth 2,000 Bells or more; or any other item worth 500 Bells or more. An extra three points are given if the item is wrapped.
 • 4 points — An item they already own; a clothing item currently worn by the player; an edible item; a bug, fish, or fossil worth between 501 and 1,999 Bells; or any other item worth between 126 and 499 Bells. An extra two points are given if the item is wrapped.
 • 3 points — A sea creature; a bug, fish, or fossil worth between 1 and 500 Bells; or any other item worth between 1 and 125 Bells. An extra point is given if the item is wrapped.
 • +1–3 points — completing a favor
 • +3 points — cheering up a villager when they are angry or sad
 • +2 points — paying 10,000 Bells to Katrina while the player's friendship value with a villager is between 0 and 149
 • Special quests (delivery):
 • +3 (giver) successful delivery
 • +3 (recipent) gift is wrapped
 • +1 (recipent) gift is unwrapped

Actions that decrease friendship[edit]

 • −1 point — offering medicine to the villager when sick without actually having any
 • −1 point — ending a treasure hunt without finding the buried item before talking to the villager again[nb 2]
 • −2 points — giving the villager trash[nb 1] as a gift during a conversation
 • −3 points — repeatedly pushing the villager or hitting them with a net until they tell the player to stop[nb 3]
 • Special quests (delivery):
 • —1 point (giver) — unsuccessful delivery but present is still wrapped
 • —2 points (giver) — unsuccessful delivery + present is opened
 • —3 points (giver) — unsuccessful delivery + present is not even in the player's pockets
 • −5 points — giving the villager trash[nb 1] as a gift during their birthday party

Determining friendship value[edit]

Katrina checking the friendship status of Pierce.

Since version 2.0, the player can determine where their friendship level is with a specific villager by consulting Katrina for 1,000 Bells. The player is then able to pay Katrina 10,000 Bells while the friendship value with the selected villager is between 0 and 149 to grant a small boost of two friendship points. The dialogue that is presented determines where the player is with a specific villager.[2]
