Firefly
The Firefly[nb 1] is a bug in the Animal Crossing series that has appeared in every game to date. The Firefly occasionally emits bioluminescence as it flies around. In earlier games, the Firefly appears as only a small glowing yellow orb, but starting with City Folk, it has a more realistic appearance.
In the games that the Firefly appears in, it is the most common bug that the player can encounter, and can be found flying around fresh water bodies in the night. In New Horizons, it can be caught in the first month of summer.

Real-world information
The lampyridae, colloquially known as the firefly or lightning bug, is an insect most notable for its bioluminescence. In this regard it is similar to the jellyfish. Oddly enough, there are many species that do not produce light at all.
