Balloons are items given out free of charge by Phineas in Animal Crossing: City Folk, or Happy Home Showcase players in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Also, in Animal Crossing, Tom Nook will give the player a free balloon if they enter his store during a sale (but not on Sale Day). They are held in the player's hand like tools, which means that the player cannot use a tool while holding a balloon. Additionally, they also appear in the Tortimer Island tour Balloon Hunt and are worth one point each when popped with a slingshot. In multiplayer, players may pop balloons of their color only.
The balloons can be placed in a house, and do not appear in the catalog. If the player trips while running or falls in a pitfall while holding a balloon, they will lose it.
