Stationery, also referred to as paper (びんせん binsen?), is a gameplay element in the Animal Crossing series; its primary function is for letter writing, and for receiving items in the mail. It comes in packs of four, with a variety of different patterns and themes.
Stationery can be obtained in a number of ways:
- It can be purchased at store, or in New Leaf and New Horizons, the Nookling Stores.
- It may be given to the player by villagers for completing requests (Animal Crossing only).
- Found at the dump or in the Police Station's 'Lost and Found' (Animal Crossing}}).
- Found in the checkpoint's 'Lost and Found' (Wild World and City Folk).
If the player receives a letter written on previously unencountered stationery, the stationery will be automatically added to the player's catalog in Animal Crossing: Wild World. This also applies to stationery sent by special characters or the HRA. Although these types of stationery cannot be bought or written on, they will appear in the catalog.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the mail system works differently, and stationery is no longer an item. Instead, the different cards stored on the card stand at the airport serve the same function and mail delivery costs 200 Bells, regardless of the design which is used in a letter. Consequently, any card designs used by a player do not appear in their catalog. Some stationery is only available to use for a limited time, often coinciding with the dates of in game events or seasons.
