The Nintendo Switch, codenamed "NX", is a hybrid gaming console and is Nintendo's current video game console. Officially revealed via a trailer posted on Nintendo's YouTube and social media channels on October 20, 2016, it was released worldwide on March 3, 2017, with a suggested retail price of US$299.99. On September 13, 2018, Nintendo announced a teaser for the then-untitled NH, which was later released on March 20, 2020.

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game home console and handheld made by Nintendo and released in 2017. It can be played portably or placed in a dock to play on a TV or monitor. It features detachable controllers known as Joy-Con, which can be used either in tandem or separately; there is also a more traditional controller known as the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. NH was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Additionally, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and SSBU, which feature content from the SER, were released for the Switch in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

The Switch is a hybrid device: players can play it as a handheld console or as a home console using a TV-connected dock. Similar to the DS and 3DS, cartridges serve as the physical format of its games. The Nintendo Switch ecosystem was the first Nintendo system to use a paid online service known as Nintendo Switch Online. As such, nolink is the first game in the SER where online is limited to paid users. The Nintendo Switch's built-in screenshot feature allows screenshots to be taken with the tap of a special square button on Nintendo Switch controllers; this also makes nolink the first mainline game not use an in-game screenshot system.
+
As of September 30, 2024, the Nintendo Switch has sold a total of 146.04 million units worldwide, making it both Nintendo's best-selling home console and its second-best-selling console overall, behind the Nintendo DS.

Prior to the release of nolink, Nintendo released a special edition of the Switch for a limited time that features a short-themed dock and Joy-Cons. In September 2020, Nintendo announced the special edition console will return to retailers at an unknown date.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Additionally, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which feature content from the Animal Crossing series, were released for the Switch in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

As of September 30, 2024, the Nintendo Switch has sold a total of 146.04 million units worldwide, making it both Nintendo's best-selling home console and its second-best-selling console overall, behind the Nintendo DS.[1]

Features and built-in software[edit]

User profile icons[edit]

Users can customize their profiles with icons of characters from various Nintendo franchises, including Animal Crossing. 12 Animal Crossing icons have been available since the console's launch, and an additional six based on Animal Crossing: New Horizons specifically were added in the 10.0.0 system update on April 14, 2020.[2]

Additional profile icons based on New Horizons are available exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online members and can be purchased with My Nintendo Platinum Points.

Captures[edit]

Screenshots and 30-second video clips can be captured in most software, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, via a dedicated button (Switch Capture Button.svg) on the left Joy-Con and Pro Controller. Additionally, New Horizons has an in-game camera mode that allows for taking screenshots with Switch + Button.svg. All screenshots and videos are saved to an album that is accessible from the HOME Menu.

Friends[edit]

Users can become friends either by exchanging Friend Codes or sending a friend request after playing online together. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the player can view the online status of friends who have played the game via the Best Friends List NookPhone app. Friends can visit each other's islands, send letters to each other, and, if marked as a Best Friend in-game, message each other directly via the Best Friend List NookPhone app.

Nintendo eShop[edit]

The Nintendo eShop is a digital store where games and software can be purchased and downloaded. All retail Animal Crossing-related games are also available for purchase from the eShop, and the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island Transfer Tool is available to download for free exclusively from the eShop.

Nintendo Switch Online[edit]

Main article: Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online is a paid online service that is required for online play. Animal Crossing: New Horizons utilizes Nintendo Switch Online for various features, including the friends system, visiting other players' islands over the internet, uploading dreams, uploading designed homes to the Happy Home Network, and using the island backup feature. Additionally, active Nintendo Switch Online members can unlock the Nintendo Switch Lite furniture item in New Horizons through the eShop.

There is also a Nintendo Switch Online mobile app that features game-specific online services, including NookLink for New Horizons.

A more expensive tier of Nintendo Switch Online, known as Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, includes, among other things, access to the Happy Home Paradise DLC for New Horizons while the subscription is active.
