The game is started when a [[villager]] asks the player if they wish to play. Upon agreeing, the screen will then fade and reappear at the [[Town Hall]], where a number of villagers have gathered with the other villager and the player. The villager that suggested the game will then announce rules and how long they will be playing for. After the rules have been explained, the screen will fade again. When the screen reappears, the villagers will have disappeared, and a transparent blue bar will run across the screen, telling the player to go off and find everyone. The clock in the upper left corner will be replaced with a stopwatch, indicating how much time is left. The player must find all the villagers before time runs out.

A resident will hide behind trees, buildings, and signposts, occasionally peeking their head out to look. The only method for a player to take is to run around town until spotting them. A villager can be located anywhere around the town.

It is impossible to see behind buildings so if a player is having trouble spotting an animal they can just run along the back wall of the building (whilst touching the wall) and see if anything blocks their path. Most likely that thing is an animal.

Friga explaining the rules of hide-and-seek to the player in Animal Crossing: City Folk

Hide-and-seek is a game in Animal Crossing: City Folk and Animal Crossing: New Leaf where the player must find three villagers within a time limit.

Hide-and-seek is initiated by a villager, who will ask the player if they want to play. If the player accepts, the player and villager, as well as two other villagers, will appear outside town hall in City Folk or in the event plaza in New Leaf. The villager who initially asked the player to play will explain the rules, which are that the player must find the three of them, who will hide outside, within 10 or 15 minutes.

Curly hiding behind a signpost in Animal Crossing: City Folk

Once the game starts, the villagers will disappear and the player must find them within the time limit, which is displayed on-screen. Villagers can hide behind trees, buildings, signposts (in City Folk only), and public works projects (in New Leaf only), and they will occasionally look out from their hiding spot, revealing themselves. When the player finds a villager, they must speak to them; when the player finds all three villagers, they will return to town hall or the plaza and the villager who initiated the game will give the player a random item as a reward.
