Fossils are an item in Animal Crossing. When obtained, the player can send the fossil to the Farway Museum via a letter for identification. Once identified, the fossil will be returned in its identified form.
Fossils can be obtained from digging marked holes on dirt or grass tiles which naturally spawn each day.
