Gracie is a giraffe in the Animal Crossing series who appears in every game to date. She is a fashion designer who offers exclusive items to the player. In games prior to Animal Crossing: City Folk, she visits the player's town and will give the player exclusive clothing if a specific task is completed. In City Folk and New Leaf, she owns GracieGrace, an upscale clothing and furniture store.
Characteristics
Appearance
Gracie is a lightish-yellow giraffe with big brown spots, an orange nose, ears with pink insides, a pair of ossicones with orangish-brown linings, and big half-closed eyes with indigo eyeshadow. Her short hair, hands, eyelashes, and tail's tip are blackish-brown. She wears a pinkish-purple scarf, a darkish-blue tank top with orange circle patterns surrounded by green rings, and brown fishnet pantyhose. In New Leaf, Pocket Camp and New Horizons, she also wears a pair of sunglasses, with their frames' colors being the same as her tank top's, on her forehead. Her neck is rather long, making her taller than most characters.
Personality
Gracie is highly pampered and prefers to live the glamorous life, driving expensive cars, and going to great lengths to maintain her fashionable reputation. Even when visiting small towns, as she frequently does as a form of recreation, she makes sure to wear excessive makeup and keep her car clean. Speaking with the villagers, she maintains a haughty air, even going so far as to brag that she, and no one else, is the famous Gracie. She exhibits a blatant disregard for local parking laws. In Animal Crossing, every time Copper and Booker hold a Bust Illegal Parkers campaign, Gracie parks illegally and manages to get away with it.
Gracie laughs at the concept of pulling favors out of the goodness of her heart. If one desires her assistance, she requires payment in return, either in the form of money or services. However, only if favors done for her are to her liking will she repay others. Whenever her car becomes dirty, she demands a nearby villager to clean it up. Only if this task is done to her liking, she gives the villager a shirt from her fashion line. Yet, the designer has shown a soft spot for the backwater world. Despite her insults, she repeatedly has developed a respect for the fashion senses of the villagers. When she is in town, she stops by the Able Sisters, occasionally finding a design that interests her. She has stated that "hicks" never fail to impress her with their fashion creativity, or making her turn up her snout at.
Snooty villagers appear to love her designs, and her voice resembles that of a snooty villager's.
Gender and characterization in Japan
Gracie is female in international versions of the games, but in Japanese (and later Korean) versions Gracie is male. Unlike Saharah, whose gender was altered unintentionally, Gracie's change is intentional, since she is depicted as an okama, a slang Japanese term (sometimes derogatory, but also a reclaimed identity term similar to queer in English) referring to effeminate homosexuals, men who cross-dress, or sometimes transgender women. The localizers of Animal Crossing considered this a cultural difference that would not be understood or well-received in America.[1] This is the reason Gracie has a male voice in all first-generation games, even Animal Crossing. In Japan, the reason "Grace" (グレース Gurēsu?) is interested in fashion is intended to be that she is an okama, i.e. a cross-dresser and/or transgender woman, while in international versions it is simply because she is snooty and glamorous.
Real name
Gracie's characterization as an okama in Japan vs that of a simply haughty fashionista in the west is also reflected in her name and rumors surrounding her real name: in Japan the name "Grace" is implied to either be a drag persona or the name taken on when transitioning, while internationally "Gracie" is the name she took to sound better as a fashion designer, similiar to Labelle. In multiple games in the series in Japanese, there are rumors that Gracie's real name is なべのすけ (Nabenosuke?), from オナベ (onabe?), the slang counterpart to okama roughly meaning " butch" or also a transgender man, and the suffix すけ (suke?). [nb 5] This appears and was changed in the following instances:
- In all Japanese first-generation games, Gracie denies the rumor that her real name is なべのすけ (Nabenosuke?); in the English version of Animal Crossing, the name she denies is "Gretchen Gruntch," implying an "ugly" or embarrassing but still female name.
- In Doubutsu no Mori+, when asked about the Able Sisters store, Mabel will begin to refer to Gracie as なべ (Nabe?) before correcting herself; in the English version of Animal Crossing, she mentions Gracie but does not slip up.
- In Wild World, in Japanese Gracie may again deny the name as in earlier games; in the English version, the rumor is that she once "wore black with navy," to which she actually admits, again using her focus on fashion to replace the Japanese characterization.
- In Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, the Gossip Stone item shares rumors (mostly tips) about the town. In Japanese, one says "Gracie's real name is Nabe-no-suke, apparently..." while in English it only says "I hear Gracie isn't her real name..."
Professional life
Fashion line
Gracie works in the fashion industry. Her designs are so well known that her name is synonymous with fashion among the townsfolk and the rest of the world. It can be inferred that she hails from a large city, perhaps the city often mentioned in the back stories of the townsfolk. However, rather than be squashed by the city, Gracie has used the hustle and bustle to become famous. From her personality, one can infer that people wait on her hand and foot. This implies that she employs a large staff and may even own her own fashion company named after herself.
Fashionista Badge
When Gracie visits towns, she has been known to notice particularly "saucy" looking villagers. After asking them a series of fashion questions, she presents them with the Fashionista Badge, a sign of how close their impression of fashion is to her own. Occasionally, Gracie will include a moldy shirt as a subtle hint. The implication is that the receiver would look better in a moldy shirt from the Gracie line rather than what they are currently wearing. Usually, this gift is given the first time a particular individual receives the badge, perhaps in order, in a somewhat disdainful way, to teach them their proper place in the world of fashion. When talking to other animals in the player's town, the snooty and sometimes the normal villagers may give the player a clue as to what Gracie looks for in a Fashionista Badge. Wearing the Gracie shirt will give the player a better chance of getting a Fashionista Badge with a good comment. She will also compliment the player on the choice of clothes.
Gracie also gives an outfit for 300 Bells if the player persistently bothers her. Items like the Nile shirt can be given.
Effect on the town
Whenever Gracie visits the town, the snooty villagers take note. Occasionally, Gracie will create an outfit for villagers who do her favors or pay her money. As a result, Gracie's designs have become coveted among female villagers. Peppy villagers sincerely hope that the reason they have not experienced much success in their performing careers is that they do not have fancy clothes, and they see Gracie's fashions as a way to correct the issue. The lazy villagers have been known to admit crushes on Gracie, as women of her beauty do not often visit the town. Gracie calls cranky villagers "Evil Clowns" in which they have a hatred toward Gracie.
In Animal Crossing, where Copper is a police officer, Gracie's disregard for the law frustrates him. Held to his post, he cannot arrest her, although he entertains the thought. Copper will tell the player about a campaign called Bust Illegal Parkers a few days before Gracie comes to town. When Gracie comes to town, she will park her car in a random acre in direct violation of the campaign, much to Copper's displeasure.
Appearances
In Animal Crossing
In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, Gracie can appear as a visitor every two to seven days. In the days leading up to her arrival, Copper tells the player that the police station is going to hold a "Bust Illegal Parkers" campaign, the date of which coincides with Gracie's visit. When Gracie is in town, Copper tells the player the acre she is parked in.
Gracie stands next to her car in place of a random signpost. If the player speaks to her, she asks them to wash her car. This can be done by repeatedly pressing . If the player is slow, nothing is rewarded; if they are moderately fast, a regular clothing item is given; and if they complete the task quick enough, Gracie will reward them with one of 29 exclusive "Gracie brand" clothing items.
In all the Japanese games and Dòngwù Sēnlín, Gracie is male. In Animal Crossing, she is female but still has a male voice.
In Wild World
In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Gracie can visit town on a random weekday, standing in front of her car outside town hall. When spoken to, she gives the player a four-question quiz about fashion. She then hands the player a Certificate letter containing a rating based on the player's answers as well as a clothing item. A low rating rewards a moldy shirt, a medium rating rewards a subdued print, and a high rating rewards a random Able Sisters clothing item.
After the player takes the quiz, speaking to Gracie four more times prompts her to ask for an offer from the player for a clothing item. Depending on the number of Bells offered, the player will receive either an Able Sisters clothing item or an exclusive Gracie clothing item.
The player references Gracie in the catch quote for the old tire, saying "I caught an old tire! Did this come from Gracie's car?!"
In City Folk
Gracie has a store called GracieGrace, named after herself; the only apparent staff member is Labelle. GracieGrace carries not only clothing, but furniture too. The items stocked are expensive, but there are end-of-season sales where the player can buy items that are marked down.
Gracie will randomly appear at GracieGrace. When the player speaks to her, the player can get an appraisal of their ensemble. The items considered are the player's clothes, accessories, haircut, hair color, and shoes. If the player wears a helmet or wig, hair color and style are not considered.
Gracie will comment on the player's look, if any, and the shoes. She will mention the player's haircut if she does not like it.
If the player's ensemble is sufficiently coordinated, Gracie will give the player a 10% discount on their GracieGrace purchases. The discount is good only while in the store.
Gracie is also featured on two magazine covers in Shampoodle, these magazines are copies of Ms. Nintendique, a fashion and beauty magazine. These magazines can also be seen in Shampoodle in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
In New Leaf
After the player has upgraded Timmy and Tommy's store to T.I.Y., Gracie will start appearing at the event plaza on random week days after the player has spent 70,000 Bells. When she appears, she will mention that she is looking for a town where she can open her shop, GracieGrace, but has yet to decide which town she deems worthy enough for her image. Thus, in order to decide, she asks the player to partake in her fashion check.
If the player manages to pass her fashion check four times, and if other various requirements are met, T.I.Y. will upgrade to the T&T Emporium, and Gracie will open her own personal store, GracieGrace, on the third floor.
Gracie's voice has been changed to sound more like a female, with the same voice of a snooty or big sister villager. This change is made in all versions of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, including the Japanese version (despite Gracie being male in the Japanese and Korean version).
In New Horizons
Gracie was added in the 2.0 update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where she can be invited to The Roost via scanning her amiibo. Additionally, Gracie's poster can be obtained from Nook Shopping after inviting her to Photopia via her amiibo.
Other appearances
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Gracie appears as a collectible sticker.
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Gracie appears as a collectible trophy, and as a background character in the Smashville and the Town and City stages.

- ↑ suke (助/介) is a name suffix (often masculine) literally meaning "helper" and was used in many Japanese titles, so it also became a slang suffix for "a person who is known for doing/being x."[2] From this, it also became short for naosuke (なお助), derogatory slang to refer to a woman (roughly "moll"/"chick" in English). In either case, it serves to suffix onabe in an informal and somewhat perjorative manner.
