Melba is a normal koala villager in the Animal Crossing series. She first appeared in Animal Crossing: Wild World and has appeared in all subsequent games. Her English name may be a reference to the Australian city of Melbourne, while her Japanese name, Adelaide (アデレード), likely comes from the Australian city of Adelaide, as koalas are native to Australia. She shares this trait with Alice, Canberra, and Sydney, who are also female koala villagers named after cities in Australia. Melba's English name and catchphrase, toasty, may relate to the Australian opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba, who is the namesake for the Peach Melba ice-cream dessert and Melba toast - a dry, crisp, and thinly-sliced piece of toast that originated and is popular in Australia.
In New Horizons, Melba has the education hobby and can be seen wearing rimmed glasses, reading a novel while outside, and using a magnifying glass when near certain objects.
Characteristics
Appearance
Melba is a light brown koala. She has white inner ears and turns pinkish near the bottom. She has a large brown and white nose. She has small dark blue eyes, a very lightly brushed pink blush, and a cat-like mouth similar to that of Punchy. Canberra, who debuted in New Leaf, greatly resembles Melba.
Personality
Below is a brief description of the normal personality. For more information, click here.
Melba is a normal villager, which means she will act mother-like to the player. She will appear friendly, sweet, and hospitable to the player. Melba will be easy to befriend. She will enjoy partaking in the usual hobbies, and will fall asleep at 1:00 AM and awake at about 5:00 AM. Melba will rarely ever be angry, taking insults and getting hit with a net, being pushed too far or stepping on a pitfall seed. Instead, she will get sad. She will seem to enjoy talking about her current hobby (gardening, walking around, shell collecting, etc.) and hygiene. She will seem happy when talking with peppy, jock, and lazy villagers, as they seem to be friendlier and more sensitive. She will also get along easily with smug and snooty villagers. If the player is nice to her in return, talks to her daily or sends letters to her, it will be very easy to obtain her picture in Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

In New Horizons
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, if Melba is one of the villagers who moved in during the main storyline after the villager house development quest, her house will have a combination of non-craftable furniture, plus items crafted by players during the island development storyline, primarily from the Wooden Series. She cannot have her initial house interior unless she moves out of the player's island or the Happy Home Paradise DLC is purchased, in which either the player or Isabelle can reset the interior.
